I can not quantify why it is that web developers are paid less than other developers – it doesn’t add up. Perhaps it has something to do with perception of programming paradigms as opposed to under-lying technologies.

I also think it is folly that there is a shortage now of expertise and companies are responding by searching harder for expertise? They should initiate the training, if they know what is good for them.

I’m a web developer in Wellington and sometimes I think I might go and teach in the future. The thing is, 3 other members of my close family are teachers so I know how hard it can be but that probably won’t put me off.

I also agree that the number of technologies you need to know for creating a website is amazing, but not only that, you need to do each of them well. And more are appearing all the time.

I’m still amazed however at the number of people I know developing websites who just don’t get the idea of “doing it right”. though this also extended to previous (non-web) companies I worked for too. Hopefully the teachers can help there 🙂
